Without knowing what my "career" goal is, I, however, have made my mind to stay in a place close to sea water for my retirement life.
Corpus is a trial (well...we don't want this place to be permanent..yet) and it turned out to be good so far!
The sun heat here is unbelievable and the flat terrain put you nowhere to hide, but the Gulf is within 30 min drive where you can find nice beaches, all kinds of water sports and the smell of the ocean breeze.
I want to call it Miami, a mini one, with less city activities and less crowd.
It's so hard for me to imagine working here because the atmosphere is so leisure and people here would go fishing all day and bring catch home for dinner.
KJ's apartment is at 3rd floor, the top floor, and looking outside the window, there are not many things stand out which gives a great view of the neighborhood. The resort-style swimming pool in the community is cute, not for exercises, but for cooling off. We went in the late afternoon and the water was still warm. Will be really nice to have a cocktail bar beside it and sip magarita with sunshine.
Having the urge to touch the ocean, we drove to the Padre Island National Seashore which is 30 mins drive and closer than KJ's school!
The farthest we could go, with 2WD, is to the visitor center where the Malaquite Beach is located with convenient access. Since it's facing east, the late afternoon is the best time to visit if you just want to get mildly tanned. And it's open for 24-hour so visiting in the eveing on a full-moon night may be a cool experience, too. (flash lights are highly recommended)
Once thing that amazed me is the bird diversity. Just in 2 hours, we saw a good amount/variety of birds (unfortunately I don't know all the names) resting/flying/fishing/digging. I've never found bird watching is so interesting, also because the birds here are not the common ones I saw before.
Padre Island seashore is quite long, north from Corpus and south to the Brownsville (by Mexico border). Due to the wind and waves, the seashore keep re-shaping and no way to cruise along the shoreline all the way down. To get to the South Padre Island, have to take the inland Hwy and detour from Brownsville, but I may need to refresh my Spanish before visiting there so at least I can find water, gas, and restroom.
